An earlier version of the core ideas in this book were aired in public as a 10 minute opening presentation at the conference Humanity+ UK 2010 on 24th April 2010.  This book is an elaboration of these ideas.

I wish to thank the following people who read earlier drafts of chapters and provided comments that helped me to improve the content: Galit Zadok, John Pagonis, Martin Budden, Pute Jackson, Troed Sangberg.

Many of the ideas in this book became clearer to me as a result of listening to the rich set of stimulating speakers who gave lectures at  London’s RSA (Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce), of which I am proud to be a Fellow.  Several times, I attended as many as three lectures in a single week – and got plenty to think about!
